"The Bald Man"

“The Bald Man”
By: Michael T. Flanders

Richard knew he was going to die, and it was going to be bloody. He sat in his black, beat up Nissan Pathfinder, gazing out his window and letting a cigarette burn between his shaky fingers. It was that time of year again, the time when ghosts, goblins and other horrific things came to life in shades of black and orange, when it was okay to leave a severed head in your front yard as decoration. He never truly cared for the season, but as all things do, they change.
The SUV sat right off the curb, resting in front of a particularly horrific house. Richard had never seen such dedication to the holiday since he was knee-high to a grasshopper. There were life-like zombies littering the yard, limbs and gravestones scattered as if they were permanent fixtures, webbing strewn about as if a horde of spiders ravaged the land. There was even a pretty decent werewolf standing chained to the top of the roof. For a moment the man allowed himself to be drawn into the wolf’s gaze. He could tell it was made of cheap decoration and raggedy clothes, that it was fake, but somehow this centerpiece of rage came off as hungry and it wanted Richard. It was during a slew of vicious daydreams that the car jostled, just as it always did when he least expected it.
Immediately the man began checking his rearview mirrors. He wasn’t afraid someone hit him, or that a person was trying to get into his less-than-humble chariot. No, he was looking for the Bald Man. Anytime his vehicle jerked that way it was usually a prelude to the Bald Man’s approach. He expected it this evening too, just…not so soon. The sun hadn’t completely gone down yet, with flecks of departing light bleeding into the gale of darkness. The Bald Man never appeared when the sun was out. He must be anxious, thought Richard.
Checking all the mirrors for the fifteenth time, he leaned back in his seat and took a drag off his cigarette. He left the butt lingering between his lips, periodically shifting his sight between the yard and mirrors. Nothing. He expected something to happen, the car to shake again, his cigarette to be extinguished, a cold chill to overtake his spine. Nothing. Richard’s fingers instinctively bounced up and down in anticipation. It was the moments like this that truly scared him. Granted, the Bald Man was a perfect image of fear, with his ash-white head, those diamond entrenched eyes, and that blacked out smile which seemed to stretch from ear to ear. But so far his appearance was only met with little more than veiled threats and occurrences of mild trickery. The moments of silence though, that was where the demons dwelled.
Richard never prided himself on having any sort of imagination. He had a dull job with the construction company, he dropped out of community college for his lack of interest, and anytime he tried to spur his creative muse he was always met with one everlasting thought – what’s the point? But this was different. This wasn’t real life. This was the paranormal and he never skipped a beat when allowing his mind to drift to some sort of horrific death at the hands of a faceless creature. Vampires, werewolves, even the idea of a killer leprechaun has passed through his thoughts at least once. The Bald Man was becoming a real hazard, especially to his mental state, but Richard started to wonder in those hushed moments, what else lurks in the darkness, and what else wants to kill him?
“Richard,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Richard, I’m coming.”
Snapping back to reality once more and dropping the cigarette from his lips, Richard lurched forward, gripping his steering wheel without even realizing he did so. The Bald Man was closing in. He always started out a bit reserved and very low in volume, but that generally didn’t last long.
He called to Richard once more. “I’m coming for you. Are you ready?” The man began frantically searching his SUV for any signs of his stalker’s presence. Nothing. He looked to the yard, letting his eyes investigate each crevice of gore and horror. Nothing. It was as his sight stopped on a zombie in the back that he realized how stupid of an idea this was. The Bald Man encouraged him to search out his fears, to fight them, and supposedly that would be his way of expelling the creature. Now though, he could tell it was just more fuel for the fire. Richard’s heart raced as he began fumbling for his car keys. He needed to leave now, before the Bald Man appeared. He shoved the key in the ignition, flipped the SUV on and pressed the gas, only to be halted as the face of fear lurched from the windshield. The Bald Man had arrived.

Long Time, No See...

Yeah, yeah, I know... It's been a few months since I last posted. I'M SORRY!!! Life has been pretty hectic lately! School, work, LIFE, it's all swarmed me, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's a breakdown from the last time I posted, which should be somewhere in November of last year:

My play, Ichabod's Hollow was a pretty big success, with yours truly even making a special guest appearance in it on the final night (look on my Facebook for the pictures). Since then, I've written a couple of one-act plays and did some revisions on others for an anthology show this past Spring. However, things fell through with that, but a Fall show is in the works using all of the scripts. Once the final prep work is done on that I'm hoping to have my Noir (?!?!?) script done for a Spring 2012 production. I know, I know, Noir is a bit different for me, but Casablanca really opened up my perception to it. In related news, keep a look out for my Fine Print script in the Fall line up, it has potential to be one of my best pieces yet!!!

Year One at Hogwarts is officially done! I completed my first year of (part time) college and am returning in the Fall for my second year. I think this year I will concentrate more on my general studies and writing courses, rather than the educational classes (didn't dig my intro to Ed class too much). I guess I'm just biding time until I either drop dead or hit it big with a script. The former will probably happen first. :\

When I'm not writing or going to school, my time is preoccupied with having a FULL TIME job! Now I know what you're thinking... "FINALLY!" But don't judge me, friends, for it took a lot of trials, tribulations, and me having my head up my ass to get here. I'm just glad I've finally recovered after a couple of "dark" years... For those interested, I am a preschool teacher/breaker at a nifty little place out in Peoria. It's a bit of a drive, but the people there make it worth it. I tell you what, I thought it'd be pretty hard to find a place that treated me better than WPHS, but at least this place doesn't make me do coffee runs!

As of now I am rocking the single life (boo), and for those of you who aren't keeping tabs on my love life, I split with my last ex around the end of January because she was a cheating harpy. And I emphasize the word "harpy". Alas, that doesn't mean Mr. Michael is without a love interest, but he has done what is the norm; placing himself into a completely "WTF" situation... I guess old habits die hard...

The remodel of my (mom's) house is underway, but has stagnated a bit this past month because things have just become incredibly busy. Fret not, for everything will get done this summer! The living room has a new coat of brown paint, and comes equipped with a 42-inch flat screen television, all of the game systems an early twenties male needs, and a back wall lined with posters for Shaun of the Dead, Ghostbusters, Army of Darkness, and Back to the Future. Yes, the uber-geek in me is coming out for the remodel. I won't even mention the Sam and Dean poster I have in my closet, just waiting for a place to be put up...

Halloween is just around the corner, and you know what that means! Not only is the house getting a facelift this summer, but so are all of my lovely, little toys for my favorite holiday! I think the guillotine is going to be raised by about four feet to give it a little more authenticity, the gallows will be altered (hopefully), and the dummies will have even more maneuverability! Still gotta make up for Halloween of last year... Silly friends and their wanting to get married. Pfft. :P

I have a van. An awesome van. That keeps breaking down on me. But it's still awesome. Yeah. It is.

Well, I think that about sums me up for now. Feel free to drop me a line if you want to make sure I really am alive and not a Michael clone, or if you just feel like catching up more! Keep on rockin', people!

Halloween - 2009

When I was a kid Halloween was one of the only times of the year that you could really be a kid. Nothing was greater than dressing up as a spooky creature, trick or treating for candy, being allowed to get away with some mischief, and above all else becoming scared. Sadly, Halloween has kind of fallen to the sidelines with other such holidays as Easter, Valentine's Day and the 4th of July.

However, I refuse to let it die without a fight.

This October was a very busy month for me. I was bombarded with zombie scavenger hunts, film festivals and script editing galore! Luckily, my down time was spent doing something productive - turning my front yard into a massive pile of scary and the macabre! There were zombies, scattered limbs, guillotines, and the guest appearances of the Grim Reaper and Satan.
Granted, I've seen houses a lot fancier than mine, but that doesn't change the fact that the response from the neighborhood was overwhelming. Let me put it to you this way, kids were falling off their bikes while checking out my house.

So I spent the month decorating and transforming the house into a B-Rated film, but completely spaced out on setting myself up with a Halloween costume. However, I had acquired a pretty awesome mask at the beginning of the month, which then became the bane of the children's existence. I garbed myself in all black, including a trench coat, and wore some demonic gloves to add some flavor to the outfit. I then sat out in my front yard as an inanimate object and waited for my opportunity to strike. Yes, there were the few skeptics who could see I was blatantly a person, but the crowd of people who became my scare victims overshadowed the former group by a landslide.

In short, scaring children dressed as Scooby-Doo, chasing male nurses halfway down the road, making teeny-boppers cry, nearly getting eaten by a pitbull and running after kids whose only choice was to flee into a moving vehicle was a great way to resurrect the Halloween spirit for myself, and hopefully for the neighborhood. Let's only hope that it carries on into next year for the haunted attraction I have planned!
